My Time at USC

I'm hoping to get some students to write about their experience at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Come on guys...please leave some comments for future students. Dig out some of those memories and photos and share them with us. What did you think of the University? Your classes? Your accommodation? Where did you travel? What's your fondest memory?

My time at USC in Australia has undoubtedly been one of the best experiences of my life. My stay in Australia allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and challenged me to become more independent. It was nice feeling as though I could take care of things by myself while living thousands of miles away from my parents.

I will leave Australia with so many great memories, from the big (snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, skydiving in Cairns, seeing the Sydney Opera House) to the small (lounging around with my roommates, eating Australian junk food, nights out on Thursdays, and making prank phone calls to my gullible American friends). I'll remember how excited everyone was to first see kangaroos on the USC campus and how that feeling will never change--everytime I see them, it is still exciting. I'll remember my roommate and I distracting ourselves from studying by taking 'nature walks' around the campus. There are so many beautiful areas around the campus that I would have never come across if we hadn't taken those walks. I'll remember hiding my roommates dirty dishes in the cupboards after returning from Woombye at 1 am on a Thursday so that we wouldn't get in trouble with the cleaners when they came at 8 am the following morning. I'll remember how much fun it was to travel during the mid-semester break. Especially, I'll remember all of the friends I've made during my time at USC and how much my time here has inspired me to challenge myself on a regular basis.

USC and Australia are truly remarkable places to live and to study. Being abroad forces you to open up to the world and to enjoy the cultures around you. Studying abroad gives the chance to work with people from all over the world, thus enhancing your ability function cohesively with people from all walks of life.

In my first experience at USC, I earned my Masters degree in international business and have since returned to work on my PhD. In both of these experiences, I found the international department was incredibly easy to work with. They are extremely punctual, competent and happy to help out in any way possible. Also, the majority of the professors I had were very competent and up to date on global perspectives. This made class discussions that much better. Ultimately, USC is one the top up and coming universities in Australia. It offers solid education in a picturesque region of Australia.

The other great part of being in Australia that I experienced, (aside from all of the fantastic traveling to Sydney, the reef, Byron Bay, etc.), was becoming ingrained with the Sunny Coast community. I was lucky enough to be decent at surfing and met a lot of people this way. I was also lucky enough to score a nice little job, which really allowed me to see how everyday Aussies live and work. This allowed me to see a lot of smaller local places like certain parts of Noosa, Eumundi and other towns that most people don't get a chance to experience in their time here. Overall, this is really what capped off my experience in Australia. Traveling was unbelievable, but taking in the local scene and happenings is what I enjoyed the most. It really made the Sunshine Coast my home away from home.
